Frank McCourt, author of
'Tis; a Memoir,
published by Scribner
|
|
"People
everywhere brag and whimper about the woes of their early years, but
nothing can compare with the Irish version."
So wrote Frank McCourt
in Angela's Ashes, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize
(1997) and the National Book Critics Circle Award (1996). Following
this memoir of his impoverished childhood in Depression-era Limerick,
Ireland, McCourt went on to write 'Tis, which focuses on
his life as a new immigrant in America. 'Tis has been referred to
as one of the great immigrant stories of our times.
In Teacher Man, McCourt details the challenges
he faced as an English teacher at Stuyvesant High School in New
York City.

Most recently (2007), McCourt wrote a children's
Christmas picture book, Angela and the Baby Jesus, inspired
by one ofhis mother's childhood experiences. Six-year-old Angela
steals the Baby Jesus from the crèche at the church, so afraid
is she that the cold will endanger him.
Join your colleagues to attend the Friday
night dinner on October 10, 2008 in the Oregon Ballroom. Hearing
Frank McCourt's stories and thoughts first-hand will be a grand
way to highlight your evening. You may order
extra banquet tickets for family, friends or colleagues who
might wish to hear Mr. McCourt. You might also want to attend McCourt's
concurrent session and/or book signing on Friday.
